GPS Unit

These units are good for finding a gas station or a restaurant when needed or a hotel address at the end of a long riding day. One of the best reasons to have one is that a GPS can lead you back to familiar territory if you get lost—which is very reassuring in the mountains, in a wilderness area, or on a lonely stretch of unfamiliar road. There are times, though, when you’re better off relying on your map and some common sense.

On a weeklong tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2009, I used a GPS on a motorcycle tour for the first time. I attached the unit, actually designed for car use, to the handlebar using an aftermarket mounting kit, which made the GPS easily available during the ride. This particular unit only had three hours of battery life, and my bike did not have a power outlet at the time, so I had to recharge the unit using a wall outlet adapter when I stopped at a hotel for the night. Manufacturers of newer GPS units specific to motorcycling claim a battery life of up to twenty hours. Even so, if you want to use a GPS on a daily basis on your bike, consider purchasing a motorcycle-specific unit and adding a power outlet to the bike for convenience.
